Dr. Kathy Moncreiff specializes in The Gua Sha technique.

What is Gua Sha?

Gua Sha is a healing technique used extensively in Traditional East Asian Medicine. It has been referred to alternately as “coining, spooning or scraping” but all of these refer to the practice of using prescribed instruments in a series of press strokes on lubricated areas of the bodies surface. Gua Sha works by breaking up adhesions and scar tissue in muscles while eliminating what is considered “stagnation” in Traditional Chinese Medicine.

What to Expect

Gua Sha is used to treat acute and chronic pain and decreased range of motion resulting from this scar tissue. It is also used to treat and prevent flu and the common cold, bronchitis and asthma while detoxifying the body as toxins and excess “heat” are brought to the surface to be released. We have had great success in treating a range of respiratory problems along with cold, flus and fevers.

Western medicine has recently adopted this treatment under a different name, calling it “dermal friction therapy”, due to its effectiveness in treating muscular pain, early stage colds and flus, headaches and fevers.
